Vinho Verde!

As the oppressive blanket of summer heat and humidity finally descends upon us like a velvet tracksuit soaked in tepid bath water, the human body naturally (I assert) yearns for cool, dry, refreshing white wine. You don’t want something to contemplate or fawn over with extended pinkies, you just want a quaffable, easygoing splash of…Vinho Verde!!! This “green”, iridescent, bone-dry blend comes from Portugal every summer to fill the chalices of you and all your party guests, all for what can only be call a pittance. It’s wine that we all buy by the case, and it has proven time and again to be the most versatile of summer wines…all at a price that’s lower than most grocery-store plonk. And lo, even though it’s just now getting terribly hot and humid out there, we’ve been inundated with requests for cheap summer whites. Well, you’re all in luck: I tasted a great bottle last week that knocked my perennial favorite out of contention; so, without further ado:

The 2009 Fuzelo Vinho Verde is classic, dry, citrus-ey Vinho Verde. Utterly refreshing, balanced, a little herbaceous, and filled with a bracing acidity that nothing else can match on a hot summer day in the backyard. A lively, exciting experience, without a lot of clutter…a wine that, if history is any guide, will have your guests yelling “VINHO VERDE!” after putting away a couple bottles.
