Time for Soave

Time for Soave

I hope that everyone had as relaxing of a weekend as I did. The humidity and heat got a little aggressive at times but if you were well equipped to handle such extremes of temperature than it shouldn’t have been a problem. Personally I was rather well equipped with some wine samples from one of our Italian distributors and one wine in particular made this weekend a perfect and completed scene of backyard enjoyment.

I feel like we send an e-mail about this wine around this time every year. For me that is a good sign because, never really thinking about it, I am always impressed with the quality that this wine delivers in every vintage.

The wine is the 2008 Pra, Soave “Classico” and it is excellent again in this vintage. Brothers Sergio and Graziano Pra consistently push the envelope for one’s expectations of Soave, “The Pra Soave Classico 2008 continues this winery’s track record of producing fresh and balanced Soave from 100% Garganega grown on the hillsides of the Soave’s Classico appellation near Verona.” It’s crisp flavor and bright acidity make this wine a perfect pairing for all light summer fare. This is a great fish wine but will also hold up to stronger flavors and Italian classics like Mozz salads.

If you are unfamiliar with Soave I highly recommend this wine as a strong introduction. It is a great alternative white wine to your unoaked Chardonnays and lighter Sauv Blancs. That said, if you find that you really love this wine as I do, you should know that the overall quality of wine coming from this area in Italy’s Veneto region has had a history of reliable inconstancy and it is much more difficult to just grab a “good Soave” off the shelf of any old wine shop than one would think. Soave is a wine that vastly rewards one for knowing a little something about the producers in the region. At its top tier Soave can really be a stunning white wine and Pra is a producer known for making some of the best.

That is why we follow these guys and why I am so happy to be bringing the “classico” to you here once again this year. This is a great summer wine that pairs well with food but also drinks exceptionally well on its own as a cocktail wine. I highly recommend this bottling to every palate type.
