I won’t go into great detail over this wine, it is at a level of refinement that makes a lengthy description seem almost vulgar.

The 2010 Alphonse Mellot ‘La Moussiere’ Sancerre is the Puligny Montrachet of Sancerre. At least that was my first notion when swirling the wine around to consider what exactly this unbelievable wine was doing. Mellot’s Sancerre is at a totaly different level of experience, like when you see the bathrooms at Biltmore in Asheville and realize you might as well have a port o john in your own house. I have seldom come across any Sauv Blancs at this level of sophistication, it almost transcends the type (making my subject line a bit off the mark).

The wine is creamy and round like ripe melon balls, cleanly expressed chalk mineral and fresh varietal acidity. Excluding all of the extremities Sauv Blanc familiarly leans towards while encapsulating everything that is the grape. Not even the top bottling from this estate and yet for me it is the JS Bach of Sancerre.

I wish something in my life made this a wine I could drink daily the vintage through, let me mop up around the crush floor just pour me a glass with my lunch every day and I will be happy.

Ah, but it seems we are on earth once again.
