Today’s offer comes to you courtesy of your fellow Guild members. We at the Guild are always trying to come up with new wines to offer, and so we use literally dozens of different methods to create idea flow — monitoring a variety of written and online reviews, going to trade tastings, eating (and drinking) out often, reading prominent wine blogs, etc. etc. The wine we’re offering today was requested by one of our Guild members back in December, who had came across it somehow and wanted a bunch. We sourced a case for them and didn’t think too much about it, as that’s a service we’re happy to provide all our members (i.e., tracking things down you’re interested in them). Then just last week we received another request for the same wine from a different member who had heard about it a different way, and the alarm bells went off. We then did some independent research and the wine checked out quite well, so today we are offering it to the entire Guild membership.

The Rubus 2007 Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that comes with its own back-story: A local importer heard that some high quality Napa Valley juice was being dumped on the market during the difficult financial environment in 2008 and jumped on it (Washington Post story here), creating a label and bottling it for his customers. Enhancing the story with a a bit of rumor, it’s supposedly from a very high profile producer, and is juice from the Stag’s Leap District (one of Napa’s most presitgious). With 2007 being a spectacular vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon, if the story is true the wine ought to be anywhere from excellent to exceptional.

So I went to CellarTracker to look at how others have reviewed it, and lo and behold, the scores are great — consistently 89/90 points, and so many mentions of QPR you’d think you were at a Scrabble convention. This looks like as good a deal as you will find on inexpensive CA cab, so load the boat if you’re even the slightest bit inclined as I doubt we’ll see the combination of a great vintage and very weak economy (in 2008) creating deals like this again any time soon.

There are good quantities of this one, but get your orders in quickly so that we can get them turned around for delivery ASAP…
