Well with the Defcon 5 behind us we can continue with the type of wine we are used to selling this time of year when most folks, myself included, are looking for easy drinking, inexpensive wines that are good enough that they don’t require too much thought.

Our penchant for finding incredible, ‘off the radar’, great wines from all over the world has gifted us with the incredibly useful ability of finding the best wines to be had in the $10 and under category as well. There are great wines for these lower prices to be had, the risk being that they are a small percent of what is out there and when you get a bad $7 wine it can really hurt you.

Hopefully no one is having to drink bad wine anymore as it is our endeavor to take the sting out of the guesswork involved in finding these everyday drinking gems.

Please allow one further plug of our abilities in this field as I just want to make certain that everyone knows that we can source and purchase for you the best wines in the $5, $6 and $7 category in mass for those of you with weddings or any event that require large amounts of wine. That is correct, it is possible to have catering and event wines that are correctly made and actually worth drinking. In our constant tasting we keep notes of the best of these wines for those who are in need and who inquire.

So that brings me to the wine in question today. Perhaps you saw the teaser video on the web site where I talk about this wine a little bit. That’s right! we do video now so keep an eye on that web site.

Keep in mind at this price point you are looking for an absence of flaws and a reasonable amount of quality for the price. There is no tangy cheap wine after taste here, the alcohol is completely integrated and there is actually acidity and tannin to the wine giving it some class. This is why we love Portugal for inexpensive wines, these are still “made” wines and not “manufactured” wines even though they are sold at a great price.

I hate to say it but most of the big name world wine production for wines at this price point give you the feeling that you may find the words “contains 10% real grape juice” somewhere on the label. We are here to make sure you never experience those wines again.

The 2007 Quinta do Encontro Barraida is composed of Merlot and the native Portuguese grape Baga. The wine is vinified in stainless and then aged six months in oak. The palate is of soft, new world style fruit. Full bodied, elegant and really almost velvety on the palate from the softness of the ripe Merlot. This is a great full red wine that is easy enough to pair with food but lush enough to be a pleasing cocktail wine or casual sipper. For $7 I have not had a wine I like as much in a long time and I have happily adopted the wine in to my artillery of inexpensive wine ideas for caterings, events and everyday use.

Keep it around the house for unexpected guests, casual use or mop up. Recommended!
