Avontuur Shiraz — The Last of the Killer Closeouts

Avontuur Shiraz — The Last of the Killer Closeouts

Over the past several weeks we have offered a number of truly exceptional values that we purchased from a lengthy closeout list offered by our friends at JW Sieg. The Besada Baladina Albarino, Bouchard Finlayson Pinot Noir, and Morgenhof sparkling wine and late harvest port have been some of our best received wines of the year to date. There is one last wine from among that group that hasn’t yet been formally offered — while it’s every bit as good a bargain as the others, we’ve used most of our recent bullets on summer whites and roses. But this one just can’t wait any longer.

The 2005 Avontuur Shiraz shares the South African heritage of a number of the other closeout wines we offered above. Avontuur Estate is a mid-sized vintner in located in the famous Stellenbosch region. They have a strong reputation for quality, producing a broad range of mid and high-priced wines from the Bordeaux varietals in addition to Pinot Noir, Pinotage and Shiraz.

When the wine arrived a few weeks ago we simply put it on the floor without fanfare and began recommending it by hand and tasting it out on Saturday mornings. Despite that modest effort, we’ve already moved through half of our 10-case allocation as many members have sampled it, then bought and re-bought. Hopefully they won’t be upset by our efforts to raise the wine’s profile and broaden its audience, however, as we think it’s just too good to fly under the radar any longer.

The flavor profile here is a melding of new world-style dark fruit (predominately blackberry) with that distinctive spice/floral note that’s South Africa’s answer to the garrigue that one tastes in red wines from the Southern Rhone. The result is a straightforward take on Shiraz that’s fruit forward, enjoyable and balanced with enough complexity and nuance to not only grab your attention but hold your interest well past the first glass.

And best of all? Like the other crazy closeouts from that batch, the price at which we can offer this wine is a massive discount to its list price on release. Get a load of this:
