Aged Spanish Cabernet

Aged Spanish Cabernet

We don’t often find top wines that are aged and ready to go. This one was particularly exciting because it also happens to be awesome.

From the oldest plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon in Spain comes the 2001 Jean Leon Vinya la Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva.

In a blind tasting it would be hard to nail this one down. It has a soft balance like an old Margaux but the ready fruit of a top aged California Cabernet. The 2001 is the current release of this wine which means it has been sitting in perfect cellar storage this entire time. Too few estates have the foresight to wait until a wine is ready before releasing them like this. Everything about this wine from the nose to finish says distinguished old Cabernet. The nose is instantly charming. The wine needs a little decanting as it is a classic of old world proportions. Ten minute in the glass and you have a wonder of what we drink wine for swirling in dark garnet before you. Classic cassis, tobacco and wood characters throughout.

This is a must have for those who do not posses cellars to properly age their wines or the will power to get them over ten years. Everyone must experience a properly aged wine and this is a steal of a price to have the opportunity. If you know and love aged Bordeaux style wines you will instantly agree that this is a screaming bargain for that unmistakable charm that can come through no trick of the wine maker but time only.

Aged wine is a category in itself that must be in your collection. I highly recommend this one.
