The wine we are offering today is one I implore you to pay attention to. I know we throw a lot of superlatives around the Guild because of our excitement over the wines we offer, but today’s wine is without question one of the most fabulous, interesting, satisfying examples I have ever had. Strong words, indeed, but stick with me…

This is a second “Best of Show” from the Elite Wines portfolio tasting some weeks ago, and another we’ve been anxiously awaiting the chance to market to you. The Bodegas Exeo Cifras 2009 blanco is quite honestly unlike any wine I’ve ever tasted. Bodegas Exeo is an up-and-coming producer with vineyards in the heart of the Sierra Cantabria in Rioja region of Spain. Their wines have just recently begun being imported into the US, but they’ve rapidly landed placements at many of the top restaurants in the DC area and begun getting some strong press (with their red landing the #1 spot in a recent WaPo article reviewing wines to seek out from Rioja –http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/20/AR2010042001179.html ).

The white (blanco) is made from 100% Garnacha Blanca (Grenache Blanc), an obscure varietal used occasionally in blending with Roussane in the Southern Rhone but rarely (if ever) bottled on its own. When I first tasted this wine a few months ago, I had no idea what to expect, but I was completely blown away by the flavor profile, acid, complexity and just overall quality. When our distributor arrived with a sample last week to re-taste, I couldn’t wait to get Will and Reeves’ view on something so unusual. To my pleasant surprise, they were every bit as excited about it as I was, and we spent 15 minutes raving about the wine, firing superlatives back and forth and furiously scribbling notes to try to describe it:

Reticent nose of stone fruits and white flowers. On the palate, gorgeous pure flavors of almond paste, white chocolate, persimmon and peach pit. Very long, nutty finish. So much going on here — this demands serious contemplation…

Pretty unusual, huh? That said, the overall quality of this wine is simply superb — while totally different in style, I’d put it on par with the best white wines we’ve ever offered at the Guild. For you serious winos out there, the closest comparison I can think of in terms of style and flavor profile would be the Chateau Beaucastel Blanc Vielles Vignes (which runs about $150+ a bottle ).

From a purely educational perspective, I think this is a wine every member simply must try — the expression of the grapes and the flavor profile is tremendously eye-opening. And from a purely hedonistic perspective, I think this wine delivers as well — the overall quality and complexity will blow you away. The only bad news (and isn’t there always some bad news?), is that since only 25 cases were imported into the US, the distributor will only allow 5 cases to go to the Guild. Here are the specifics:

If you have an interest, please get back to us promptly. If the demand exceeds our supply as so often happens, we will do our best to allocate the wine as broadly as we can so as many of you as possible may try at least a bottle. We hope you’ll find it as truly amazing as we have, and we look forward to getting positioned to take increasing quantities of this producers wines as they grow in the future…
