I have been waiting to send out this offer as it is category that merits a space in anyone’s wine closet. That is the inexpensive California Cab. Now this category has gotten harder and harder to fill. Everyone wants to have an epic Cab in Cali these days, or so it seems, and the really good cheap Cabs have fallen by the wayside. At least I have not really seen the value in anything that has been offered in the sub $15 price point as of late.

Which brings me to the Josh Cellars Cabernet from Joseph Carr. I really liked this wine. For me it is the Cabernet equivalent to the Ramsay Pinot Noir that we offered last year as a great everyday Cali Pinot. That is, the Josh Cab has a really high quality profile for the amount of cost it presents, a high QPR. It is not a dense, black, high alcohol thing which so many wines of this class feel like they have to be and is exactly where they go wrong. The wine is medium in color, medium/heavy on the palate and offers pure, cool Cabernet fruit in an honest and straightforward way. It is quite actually a gulping Cabernet Sauvignon in its deliciousness and makes a fantastic cocktail wine sure to please any guest as well as the host.

Let’s face it, a good inexpensive California Cabernet is a great thing to have at hand, it would be hard to find a wine with a broader immediate likability from all palate types. The wine makers notes are below. I recommend this as a great wine in its class and hope you enjoy it.

2006 Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon
Forward complex blends with ripe fruit flavors; Black currant, spicy, berry fruit with gentle oak nuances. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Alcohol 13.9%. Handpicked at the peak of flavor development, crushed and cold soaked for 24 hours, punched down three times a day to maximize flavor extraction. Followed with a 10-15 day extended maceration. Barrel aging in new American oak and 1-2 year French oak for 16 months; TA 0.56; Ph 3.66. Tom Larson once owned this single vineyard in the mountains of the Red Hills. This Vineyard is where for the past 10 years, all grapes have been organically grown and sustainably farmed. This appellation sits at the highest section between the Vaca mountain range and the Mayacamas mountain range. The Mayacamas are famous for great Cabernet wine, due in part to ancient pyroclastic soils that contain volcanic glass. Josh Cellars North Coast Vineyard Cabernet Vineyard contains obsidian gravel that allows the soils to drain well, which is extremely important for growing Cabernet grapes. The high elevation sunlight combined with the rich volcanic red soils and obsidian fragments produce quality grapes that are extremely unique to the Red Hills. The vineyard itself sits on a East facing slope with varying altitude from 1200 to 2000 feet. The average daytime summer temperature is 84 degrees with average nighttime temps of 51 degrees.
