A 91 point Verdejo from super importer Jorge Ordonez is not to be overlooked. Enjoy.

We have not tasted the wine but we like to pass along offers to you when the press is unusually high for price and let you make your own decisions.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Rating: 91 Points

“The Verdejo grapes for the 2009 Shaya are sourced from both estate vineyards and local growers with vine age ranging from 75-112 years. The wine was barrel-fermented and aged on its lees. Medium straw-colored, if offers up an alluring aroma of baking spices, spring flowers, and peach. On the palate it has a creamy texture, vibrant acidity, and intense flavors leading to a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. It is a great value in dry, aromatic white wine that over-delivers in a big way. Bodegas Shaya is a new collaboration between the Gil family of Jumilla and importer Jorge Ordonez.”

If you are not familiar with Verdejo you should know that it is one of the great white wine varietals of Spain. Similarly to Pinot Grigio, Verdejo is a great summer time thirst quenching, crisp, dry white wine. Un-similarly to Pinot Grigio, Verdejo has a much fuller, ripe fruit palate which I find to be more compelling than the usual stuff you are finding in the crisp white category. All of that together makes it a great everyday white that it is uncommon to see commanding the press Parker has given to this wine. To my mind that equals a super interesting find and one worthy to pass along to you all

This white Spanish wine gem is 100% old-vines Verdejo from sandy riverstone soils of Rueda. Shaya is named for a deer indigenous to the region. Shaya Verdejo is amber in color with a full, rich body and vibrant acidity. It offers flavors of melon, lime, green apple, orange, almond and distinctive mineral notes. No oak. It’s long and refreshing on the clean finish. Enjoy Shaya Verdejo over the next 2-3 years with grilled shrimp, swordfish, roast chicken, fruit salad and mild cheeses.

Summer is coming and what could be better than a new Verdejo from Jorge Ordonez?
