91 Point Super Summer Chardonnay

With the early arrival of summer, we’ve been featuring a broad range of white wines over the past few weeks that are perfect for lighter foods and warmer weather. During this time I’ve been searching for a California Chardonnay to offer, as it’s been quite some time since we’ve sent one out. I’ve tasted any number of candidates over this period, but none have lived up to the price/value equation of recent Guild favorites like the 2007 Chalone Estate or the 2007 Mount Eden Wolff.

In addition to tasting through the wines that distributors share with us on an almost daily basis, we also do a fair bit of proactive research by following published reviews and comments in the Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, the Parker bulletin boards, and a variety of other online sources. Today’s wine, the 2007 Lincourt Chardonnay Rancho Santa Rosa, came on my radar with a strong review from Wine Spectator, and when it surprisingly showed up on a closeout list from one of our distributors I immediately ordered a bottle to sample. I have been familiar with Lincourt for some time, as they have been a solid supplier of mid-range Chardonnay for many years and their base level cuvee is a popular by-the-glass offering in nicer restaurants. Their Rancho Santa Rosa vineyard designate was new to me however, though I’ve certainly had other chards from that vineyard that have been quite impressive. Given the spectacular 2007 vintage and the high quality fruit source my expectations were high, and when we opened the bottle at our Board meeting last week we were all universally impressed. In lieu of a written tasting note, here’s some real time video from our meeting:

It’s pretty rare to run across a California Chardonnay that successfully bridges the Old World/New World stylistic divide, so finding one that the Richeys and myself could both genuinely enjoy is saying something. Combine that with a 91 score from Wine Spectator and a closeout price from the distributor and you have an outstanding offer:

This is high quality Charonnay from a great vintage made from vineyard-designated fruit, but offered at the price of most everyday drinkers. Definitely an offer to get aggressive about, as I have…
