The coolest part of this offer is the ability to pick up a 12 year old wine that have been stored in perfect conditions since it’s release.

Usually I am looking for Old World wines that will appeal to New World palates but this one is just the opposite. The 1998 De Bortoli ‘Melba’ has aged Bordeaux written all over it and yet it still drinks with the weighty beefiness of an Australian wine. Here are some facts:

The 1998 Melba ‘Reserve’ is a traditional Yarra Valley Cabernet from the oldest vineyards dating back to 1971.
100% cabernet sauvignon, 22 months in new oak.
Upon release it sold for $60. Current Release price is $45
1998 was a 95-point rated vintage in Southern Australia by Robert Parker, the second best vintage in last 30 years.

So the bad news is that there are only 3 cases of this wine available. The good news is that it is a super cheap and delicious, well aged wine. We may have to give board member David Storm first grab at these as he is our resident Australian wine lover. If you are a fan as well you should e-mail him here at the Guild as he has a great ability to pick excellent Aussie wines.

This is a fantastic buy that I highly recommend drinking with a nice steak dinner or in a high back leather chair in your library, you know the type. Aged wine does it better.
