What is “Grower Champagne”?

The large Champagne brands like Moët, Veuve Clicquot, and Bollinger blend grapes from hundreds of vinyards to create a “house style”. Grower Champagnes are made by families who grow their own grapes, which means the wines reflect the distinct vineyard. This is what makes them so interesting.

Fun Fact: Less than 5% of Champagne imported into the U.S. are grower champagnes. Come taste the following 5 examples and make your taste buds happy that they know you.

About The Champagnes:

Voirin-Jumel, Blanc de Blancs 1er Cru Brut
This 1er Cru Champagne is made in a fresh and friendly style, highlighting notes of bright orchard fruits accented by a light yeastiness and a slight minerality on the finish. This full-bodied wine should ideally be served with food (think white meat and cream sauces or chicken pot pie), though it is a pleasure to enjoy all on its own. No doubt this will flourish with age, yet it is drinking wonderfully today.
Tasting Special:: $34.39 || Regularly: $42.99

Agrapart Terroirs Blanc de Blancs Brut Grand Cru
Agrapart is making exceptional Champagne. The style is rich yet very clean and bright with the complexity rarely found at this price. Artisanal, honest and pure, this wine surpasses in quality a number of champagne names we all know – at triple the price.
Tasting Special: $51.99 || Regularly: $64.99

Larmandier Bernier Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Longitude
An intensely mineral-driven wine, the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Longitude pulses with energy and tension. Partial aging in cask gives the wine much of its texture and slightly burnished quality to the fruit. Dried pear, spice, menthol and licorice are laced into a vinous, textured finish that speaks to crystalline purity and nuance. As the name suggests, the Longitude emerges from a collection of parcels along the same longitude of chalk and limestone soils, in this case Vertus, Cramant and Oger, fermented in a combination of cask and stainless steel. This release is based on 2012, with the addition of 40% reserve wines. Dosage is 4 grams/liter. Disgorged: November 2014. – 94 pts. Vinous
Tasting Special: $50.39 || Regularly: $62.99

Gatinois Cuvee Tradition Brut Grand Cru
The Brut Grand Cru Tradition is one of the very best values in artisan Champagne. Beautifully perfumed and aromatic, the Tradition offers exceptional quality, especially in its price range. White flowers, mint, pear and baked apples all flesh out effortlessly. Creamy, layered and expressive, but also light on its feet, the Tradition is impeccably balanced. Still a bit tightly wound, the Tradition needs a bit more time in bottle to open up. This release is based on 2012, with the addition of reserve wines. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2015. 92 pts. Vinous
Tasting Special: $38.38 || Regularly: $47.99

Andre Clouet Brut Bouzy Grand Cru Rose
Out of Clouet’s impressive line-up, no wine highlights his ability to walk the line between power and elegance greater than his rosé. An intriguingly rich heather color, and primary Pinot aromas leap from the glass, yet the Champagne is admirably fresh, focused and poised. It is Champagne with gravitas, with the mysterious weight of fine red Burgundy. Not to mention, the red fruit profile and sleek poise. Yet, there is textured chalky minerality that’s purely Champagne. The high acidity and bubbles provide such gorgeous contrast to so many foods. Clouet’s Rosé pairs with everything from rich fish to game.
Tasting Special: $47.99 || Regularly: $59.98
